Personal Update after a bit of a hiatus...
Real life this past several weeks has been busy for me. I’ve been preoccupied with uni, placement, mentoring and then dealing with a recurring sinus inflection that I’ve not really been spending much time on social media/fandom (a part from binge watching Killing Eve, Good Omens etc).
Placement is going well so far, I managed to organise a placement at a school which is good. I’m doing SSO type work with one student as well as doing a project based on helping him to develop some organisational and independence skills by researching, implementing and evaluating strategies I develop. I have already made quite a few observations and I have some ideas of strategies but I just need to start researching them and seeing what is effective with regards to his disabilities.
I’ve been doing voluntary mentoring with a student with disability at uni for several weeks (though I’ve not seen them in a few weeks as he and I have both been sick). It’s going okay so far. He basically needs some help with getting use to writing/structuring essays, referencing and scheduling which is something I know a bit about. While I know he’s comfortable with me I’m going to have to work on setting boundaries as he mentioned last session wanting to work with me next year. I see him tomorrow so I’ll try and explain that I’m happy to mentor him this year but our aim should be for us to work towards him becoming independent and confident in himself and his abilities. I am just worried I might offend him, but I also think he’ll understand as he seems quite easy-going.
Also, I will be starting to do some paid work for a short period time. An opportunity came from a friend at uni who is doing her PHD and requiring a communication assistant for her research interviews. As she has a vision impairment along with a hearing impairment sometimes it takes 30 times for her to understand what someone is saying. Thus, my role would be to step in when she’s having trouble understanding and relating the information to her. We were meant to start working together a few weeks ago but she was sick and then I was, but hopefully we will start next week.
Lastly, I’m just fed up with my sinuses. I have a recurring sinus infection that even after nearly 4 rounds of antibiotics won’t go away. My GP told me to do another round of antibiotics and gave me a referral to go back to my ENT as I’ve been having on-going issues since the beginning of this year. I’ve yet to make the appointment but I will tomorrow, hopefully I’ll be able to get in soon. I’m just wanting to see if there’s an underlying issue/s affecting my sinuses.
Anyway, after this long post, I also want to say that I hope everyone else is going well.
