LJ Book Bingo 2019 - Book Review Two!

I've been so far behind with this reading challenge, but after reading a little bit of the book that the student I'm working with on my placement was reading for his English class, I ended up buying it myself so I could read the rest of it. Thus, ending my book reading hiatus. Yay!

Title: The Giver (the first of a 4 book series)
Author: Lois Lowry
Square: Children's or YA book
Synopsis:

"The Giver is a story of a brilliant boy named Jonas who happens to live in a society that is being controlled by the rules and tradition of The Elders.

Through his wisdom and mannerism, Jonas is selected as the Receiver of Memory, a post that distinguishes him from others and gives him authority. He follows the rules and receives wisdom in the form of memories, but soon becomes upset with the rules. He is shocked at the killing of babies and others.

Jonas, finally, wants to get rid of this society and saves the baby that is being released or killed by his father. The two go to Elsewhere to in search of freedom, hope, life and colors.

My Thoughts: I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book - while it had some disturbing events happen in this dystopia world, I really liked her style of writing and the main character Jonas. The disturbing elements reminded me of The Hunger Games, but not as terrible or violent. I liked being able to explore Jonas journey of discovering the secrets behind his community and watching him evolve and question everything he knew of his world. The author managed to really delve into the world she had created, without over-explaining it which worked well for me. I think that's probably due to the story being aimed at children/young adults. Overall, this book was a great read and one I recommend to people interested in the genre.
