Day Five of UK Trip: Dunrobin Castle & Culloden Moor!

Yesterday I visited Dunrobin Castle & Gardens. It was built by William, Earl of Sutherland and extended by the 3rd Duke of Sutherland. Parts of the Castle date back to the 1300s. If anyone watches ITV’s Victoria, Duchess Harriet’s husband was the Duke of Sutherland, thus she lived here too and I saw her portrait inside the Castle. Overall, it was very beautiful 💗

While we were there we were fortunate enough to watch the falcon show:

The owl above named Cedar actually sat in front of us instead of going back to his spot as he loves to watch the show :)

After that, I also went to Culloden moor where the final bloody battle of the Jacobite rising was fought in 1746 with Scottish clans fighting to restore the Stuart monarchy to the British thrones. It was the last pitched battle on British soil and, in less than an hour, around 1,600 men were slain – 1,500 of them Jacobites. This battle features in Outlander and I managed to find the tombstone for Clan Fraser, which the character Jamie is apart of. Very beautiful spot but also felt a bit eerie to imagine what took place here hundreds of years ago.

I went to both of those. I did enjoy Dunrobin Castle quite a bit. The gardens were beautiful. Plus Culloden made me very sad. I also found the Clan Frasier monument. When I was there, there was a rose there, too! Someone must be doing it on a regular basis.

Yes, the garden there was beautiful and the view from the castle was amazing!

All the grave stones had flowers left there as well so I think they must leave them there regularly.

By the way, did you do the museum at Culloden Moor? I ask because I would have, but my parents weren’t keen to spend 12 pounds each and I wondered if I missed much.

If you are really into Scotland's history, it was fine but I got more out of just walking around and looking at the markers.

I know! It’s quite amazing and eerie to think what happened hundreds of years ago.
